All I can say is that you only realize how big your mountain is once you're lying motionless, helpless, and hopeless in the valley below. No one goes there on purpose, if you get what I'm saying, because the only way to find your personal low is to slip and roll down that mountain of yours, straight through to the bottom, no holds barred. – Artie Lange
Have you ever felt so helpless before? I think for each of us, there are different situations when we find ourselves overcome with the feeling of being helpless. For me, it’s watching someone I care about very much in emotional and physical pain. Watching someone who had such a love for life, now being taken over by illness and circumstance.
I have learned over the last few years that there is not much we have control of. But there are a few things that we in fact can very much control. I am not afraid to admit it, but I was once a control freak! However, today that is usually not the case anymore. There is no good that comes from trying to change what has already been written many years before our own existence. In my life, I try to take situations in stride. Leave the worry and the fear behind. But sometimes, it is still a struggle. Probably one of the hardest things to overcome. But not when it comes to situations in my own life. It usually happens when I am watching a freight train headed towards someone I care about. It compares to standing there, powerless, watching it come full steam ahead, and being frozen and not able to move your feet.
For myself, in order to overcome the helplessness in my own situations, is to empower myself with the ability to change my thought process. To re-wire my brain. For example, if you are in a car accident, it is the stiffening up before the impact that causes the most pain in our body. But if we just go with the motion, our bodies are more flexible and not fighting the impact that is about to take place. Therefore, less injury is caused. It’s the same thing.
Not everyone is built this way. We all have our own process and choice as to how we deal with those times. So, when I am standing and watching someone who means so much to me and has the ability to make a choice every day change to change their thought process and they decide to take the long way, it can be one of the hardest and best things we can do for them. And we can only pray that they come out on the other side knowing the lesson first hand as well as understand what it was exactly you wanted to spare them from.
So, whatever you may be facing right now, wake up every single day knowing that no mater which path you take or someone else, you can come out even better than ever if you CHOOSE to. Ok, maybe not perfect, but who is?
